Blog - Preparing Your Home for Winter

In this blog, Evelyn Bruder lists ways to make your home more efficient in winter.

Is it just me, or is it getting chilly?

While winters in Las Cruces, New Mexico are short and nothing like the northeast, they can still get a little chilly. Here are some averages that folks from out-of-town may find interesting:

October Average High is 77 and Low is 44

November Average High is 66 and Low is 34

December Average High is 57 and Low is 27

January Average High is 57 and Low is 26

February Average High is 62 and Low is 28

March Average High is 68 and Low 35

April Average High is 76 and Low is 42

October and April are great months in Las Cruces, but you can see that our winter's aren't that extreme and are pretty nice as well.

Here are a few ways you can prepare for winter:

Inspect the chimney and fireplace

You really should examine your chimney every fall. You'd be surprised how many bird nests end up in your chimney. Also check to make sure the flue opens and closes fully, and that it can be locked in either position. You should also check to see if the chimney drafts properly by lighting a small fire and watching the smoke rise up and out. If you find that there is a problem, clean your chimney with special rods and brushes. Finally, check the brick in the fireplace for any open mortar joints. Have any open joints repaired immediately as fire can spread through open joints into the wall.

Install storm windows

Windows are a common cause of winter heat loss. Storm windows should be added to any single-pane windows you have. Remove screens and install double- or triple-pane storm windows and be sure to pull down the top and bottom storm windows to help prevent heat loss.
